The Fu dog (or Foo Dog), also known as the Chinese lion, is a mystical protector of the heavens which has magical powers and the ability to protect against evil spirits. It is believed that its presence protects against all negative energies.

At the entrances to important and sacred places, usually a male and a female guard are placed as guards, one on each side, representing harmony, integrity and balance. The female Fu Dog is represented with a paw on a puppy, which symbolizes devotion, loyalty and protection. The Fu Dog male, on the other hand, is represented with his paw on a sphere or globe, which symbolizes protection, power, and world.

The first stone lions were made in the Han dynasty and early Buddhism in ancient China. At this time, lions were brought as gifts to the emperor, and have since gained much popularity. There is also a legend that Sakyamuni, the founder of Buddhism, after his birth was seen pointing to heaven and earth, roaring like a lion.
