Meaning of the Tiki Tattoo

Tiki, also known as the "Tiki God," is considered to be a Polynesian superior being. His physical representation, usually made of stone or wood, symbolizes an ancestral Polynesian figure that could be divided into various forms or personalities, the four main ones being Ku, Lono, Kane and Kanaloa. Each one symbolizes, besides a force of nature, protection and good luck.

According to Hawaiian culture, "Tiki revelations" were believed to occur through acts performed by men, such as bravery, wisdom or strength. Tiki has a facility to sense and pursue evil, and can protect its wearer from danger and evil spirits.

Ku is the God of waris usually represented with a more frightening or angry appearance, and with its mouth open, simulating devouring its enemies.

Lono is the God of peace, fertility, rain and music. His image is more cheerful and reassuring, usually carrying a smile.

Kane is the God of light, life and creator of the universe. It is represented with human features mixed with fish features, as it is a symbol of life in nature.

Kanaloa is the God of seain the form of a local deity, usually Polynesian and linked to the sea.

Their representations are quite varied and there are some characteristics in their facial expressions that can have different meanings: eyes looking up (protection); eyes looking down (good luck); open nose (smell the danger); smiling mouths (happiness); extended language (warriors).
