Real Madrid Club de Fútbol, better known as Real Madrid or Real, is a Spanish club based in Madrid. It was founded by brothers Juan Padrós and Carlos Padrós on March 6, 1902 under the name (Sociedad) Madrid Foot-Ball Club. Initially it was just a soccer club, but over time it has become one of the most famous and profitable multi-sport clubs in the world.
The team's shield has undergone several modifications over time. The one that stands out the most is the use of the crown, soon after King Alfonso XIII granted the club the title of Real in 1920. However, with the proclamation of the Second Spanish Republic in 1931, they had to remove the royalty symbols and, in exchange, a diagonal purple stripe was added (in a slightly bluer shade these days), in reference to the region of Castile. The crown did not appear again until ten years later, after the Spanish Civil War, when the color gold became predominant on the shield.
One recent change, which has been prominent since 2012, is marketing actions in the Middle East that take away the Christian cross which is on the crown (a reference to the Catholicism that is part of the crown of the Spanish monarchy).
