The Valkyries are the representation of the female spirit in Norse mythology. They are known as Amazon warriors responsible for transporting heroes to the castle of Odinthe main deity of the polytheistic religion.
The word valkyrie is derived from the Old Norse Valkyria, which is composed of two words: the noun valr (which refers to those killed in battle) and the verb kjósa (meaning "to choose"). Together, they mean "to choose the dead." They flew over the battlefields with winged horses, helmets and spears. Their armor shone in the sky forming an atmospheric phenomenon called the aurora borealis.
Odin resided in Valhalla, a very prominent palace within Asgard, the home of the gods. One of the functions of the Valkyries was to choose the most valuable warriors and take them to Valhalla to form Odin's army for the battle at the end of the world.
The chosen ones were protected and the Valkyrie remained their guardian. The warriors believed that if they prayed to the gods and went into battle honestly, they would be chosen to meet the God Odin.
Besides being a symbol of feminism, the valkyrie tattoo is usually related to personal battles. Its image also serves as inspiration for a stronger mind and physique, a quest for honor and integrity, or even in memory of someone important.
