After five years of development, LG Display has presented an extendable digital screen capable of expanding up to 50%, as well as being twistable and foldable into various shapes.
This innovative technology was presented at the LG Science Park in Seoul during the Stretchable Display National Project's Final Outcome Showcase. The prototype screen is 12 inches in its initial state, with a resolution of 100 pixels per inch and full color display in RGB.
Freeform Innovation
The LG team describes the screen as much more than an expandable display: ?it can be bent, twisted and reshaped, earning it the title of the ultimate free-form display?
Compared to the previous 2022 model, the new version has a significantly higher ?elongation index?, going from 20% to 50%, allowing it to be expanded from 12 to 18 inches. In addition, advances in structural design have reduced the physical stress on the internal cables, considerably increasing durability.
High Elasticity Technology
Elasticity has been achieved with materials normally used in contact lenses, combined with micro-LEDs that offer high-quality visuals even under shock or high temperatures.
"A new structural configuration was implemented to minimize the physical stress on the cables during the expansion of the screen, ensuring that the display remains intact even under everyday impacts," the team explained.
Versatile applicability
The screen's versatility allows it to be used on uneven surfaces. In one of the demonstrations, it was integrated into a car dashboard, where a raised segment functioned as digital buttons that appeared and disappeared according to use.
Another sector with potential for technology is fashion. According to designers Youn-Hee Park and Chung-Chung Lee, ?if we could change the design and colors of clothes in real time, it would bring a new paradigm to the fashion industry? They believe that the use of screens as a textile material offers revolutionary potential for creating clothes that never become obsolete.
