Meaning of Kokopelli Tattoos

Kokopelli is a spiritual and mythological being from the Southwestern United States. He is a deity, apparently playfully playing a flute, who also represents a symbol of erection. Despite being a sexual creature, the deity is never depicted in a vulgar manner.

His image represents fertility, and like other fertility gods, he is known for protecting agriculture and childbirth. It was believed that when he played the flute, the snow melted, letting the grass grow and inviting the birds to sing. Because of this legend, Kokopelli was strongly connected to the end of winter and the arrival of spring.

It has been widely represented in different ways, from cultural and historical tales to cave art and pottery. His appearance varies as much as the legends and myths surrounding him. He is usually depicted as a flute player with a prominent hump, sometimes with a huge, erect phallus, and in some pictures with bumps on his head. There are also images that show him to have twisted knees and feet.

Besides being revered as a fertility god, he is also recognized as a trickster, representing playfulness and the spirit of music, mainly due to his flute image, which symbolized his power to attract women as the virile god.
