The moth, also known as butterfly nocturnal or witch, is an insect very similar to butterflies, but is distinguished by its nocturnal habits, smaller antennae and resting mode of the wings.
The animal has several meanings, myths, popular beliefs and even some superstitions. They say, for example, that if we touch the insect and put our hand in our eye, we will go blind.
In many cultures the insect is linked to spirituality and the transition between life and death, representing transformation and liberation. Its transition from larva to adult stage is a symbol of rebirth.
Within Christian culture, the moth is associated with witches and bad omens. The species popularly called the witch moth is the best known for being a sign of bad omen. According to the myth, when it appears inside a residence, it means that death will soon arrive there.
One species that became world famous was the "Acherontia atropos" or skull moth, which appears on the poster of the movie "Silence of the Lambs". In the movie, the cannibal Dr. Hannibal Lecter associates the insect with transformation. On its back, the moth has a skull-like design:
